This dreamlike and sparkling portrait of the rebellious fin de siècle painter Gustav Klimt begins and ends with the artist on his deathbed. He is recalling moments of his life, while a friend sketches his portrait. Klimt lived his life to the limit, surrounded by stunning women who he used as inspiration for his paintings, in particular his lifelong muse the French actress and dancer Lea de Castro. Even though his work was adored by some, it also became a target of violent criticism for being too sexual and liberal. John Malkovich does a brilliant performance portraying the artist who continued to shock to the last days of his life.Director Raoul Ruiz is rightly considered as a true maestro within contemporary cinema. He has a unique way of making fantasy and reality mix, and manages to catch the dramatic magnificence in the Vienna artist’s paintings. The film itself is just like one of Klimt’s paintings – dreamy, dazzling, spectacular and seducing.PETRA KJELLSTRÖM
