New Yorker Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is a good-hearted if slightly naive petty thief on the run. Late one evening Harry finds himself at a film glitterati L.A. pool party, and as fate would have it, he is forced to pose as an actor. Bad idea – or so it seems. Stumbling into the world of movies, Lockhart (also the disconnected narrator of the movie) is soon caught up in a web of crime and punishment, closely resembling the sleazy world of so many 1940’s and 1950’s a pulp fiction detective novel. Such a story needs its private eye: enter Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer), a relentless homosexual who thinks he is hired to coach Lockhart for a major part in a block-buster Hollywood production. However, without an alluring leading lady, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang would fall very short of capturing its modern film noir feel. But Harmony Faith Lane (Liv Tyler look-a-like Michelle Monaghan) does the trick and drives this roller-coaster ride of dead bodies, femme fatales, armed villains and fraud. Shane Black’s film is an intriguing blend of suspense, comedy, romance and witty one-liners – and a tribute to all the Philip Marlowes of the world. DAN LINDBERG
