The Hostage

The Hostage

av Laila Pakalnina

A hijacker forces a commercial flight to land at Riga airport. Setting all hostages free he is accompanied by Tom, a seven- year-old boy travelling on his own, who voluntarily stays on the plane with his captor. Along with the traditional demands, the hijacker adds the whims of his lone hostage – beginning with an assortment of local chocolate and ending with the organizing of a song festival and a biathlon tournament. All takes place on the tarmac outside the plane, with Tom and the hijacker as avid spectators. But the police are closing in on the unlikely duo. Working with intricate, meticulously constructed scenes with dreamlike qualities, director Laila Pakalnina shuns traditional narrative structure for a style more cerebral and poetic. She deconstructs the inherent thriller elements, adding a quirky sense of humor and a fresh eye for human folly, and ends up with a loving satire of everyday life in Latvia. PER PERSTRAND
