After critically acclaimed The Missing Gun, Chinese auteur Chuan Lu is back with another celebrated film treating moral issues. Based on actual events, Kekexili tells the story of a group of volunteers fighting the poachers who are decimating the endangered Tibetan antelope, prized for its pelt. A journalist from Beijing travels to the vast wasteland on the border of Tibet to write about these civilians, who not only have to struggle against well-armed poachers, but the devastating nature itself. At the height of 4 600 metres living conditions are far from generous: cold, snow and quicksand causes severe difficulties.The film’s greatest virtue is the subtle portraits that never give away to idealizing environmental consciousness nor demonizing the perpetrators. At times even the volunteers have to do what their antagonists do for a living: sell antelope pelts. In a semi-documentary way, with a slow-paced narrative and a stunning cinematography of the grand Tibetan landscape, Chuan explores the very nature of human existence. Rewarded with the Special Jury Prize in Tokyo last year he proves that his first success was no coincidence.JON ASP
