It is time for the annual carnival in the French city of Dunkirk, 1998. This means one and a half months of partying, where nothing in the town is as it usually is. After a hefty fight with his father, Larbi decides to leave the town and go to Marseille to start a new life. On this last night in his home town he sleeps in a storefront. His sleep is disrupted by a young couple, Bea and Christian, on their way home from the party. Larbi is attracted to Bea and decides to stay a few days in Dunkirk. In the distinct atmosphere of the carnival, Larbi discovers a world he didn't know anything about. His two worlds are colliding, and the events of these days will change life drastically for at least three people. The carnival in Dunkirk takes place every year and has its roots in the 19th century. It began with the celebrations of sailors, who before going out to sea where given part of their salary and took the chance to party. Thomas Vincent does not use the carnival as a quaint frame for his story, it is the prerequisite for the film. The carnival is the looking-glass through which he watches and magnifies the relationships between the three protagonists.
