This year's Chilean film is something as unusual as a fast, action-packed thriller from Latin America. A Chilean Reservoir Dogs only with a cutting comment, in the form of satire, on the social and political situation of the country.
A nervous, gawky teenager, dressed in a school uniform, walks into a video rental shop at the top of a skyscraper in the centre of Santiago. The shop is a cover for an illegal money exchange, but Johnny is not quite as innocent as he first appears to be, either. Suddenly he whips a gun out of his school-bag and lets his older companions into the premises. But the cops are called before they manage to escape with the cash and the desperate robbers take the employees and customers as hostages. The event is broadcast on live TV and Johnny becomes a national celebrity overnight.
Gustavo Graef Marino's and Gerardo Cácere's script is based on a true story that took place in Santiago in 1990. A failed robbery became the main focus as it was broadcast live on TV. Several of those authentic news flashes are used in the film.
