Detective Tae-su returns to his hometown for the funeral of his high school friend Wang-jae. At the wake, he reunites with his old friends Suk-hwan and Pil-ho. Suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Wang-jae's death, Tae-su and Suk-hwan start investigating it. When all the leads point towards a land development project that Pil-ho is running, the pair decide to challenge him, despite overwhelming odds. Director Ryoo Seung-Wan begins with a breath-taking fistfight in a dark back alley and ends with an epic, outrageous final battle, not leaving much time to catch one’s breath in between. He mixes brilliantly choreographed martial arts sequences with Sergio Leone-ish stand-offs and eye-popping tracking shots that would make Scorsese proud. Featuring magnificent performances from the three leads (with Seung-wan himself playing the hotheaded Suk-hwan), The City of Violence is a bona fide action movie and a further proof of Seung-wan’s position as one of the world’s best and most artistically daring action directors.PER PERSTRAND
