Paranoid said the New York Times; ''Absurdities'' cried the Washington Post, and ''Twisted history'' noted Newsweek. No doubt, JFK stirred up feelings at its release in 1991, questioning the key conclusion of the Warren Commission report that Lee Harvey Oswald acted all by himself in killing John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22nd, 1963. Stone based most of the film on former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison's book On the Trail of the Assassins (1988), and was critizised for either that; or for the fact that he dramatized the story, Instead of seeing the movie as just that, a movie, a dramatic history, many attacked the film from a true/false per-
spective. However, leaving aside the emotion and controversy, JFK is a skillfully directed film in which Stone uses writing, editing and photography in creating a tight suspense drama, with John Williams' score adding to the complexity. A stellar cast (Kevin Costner, Sissy Spacek, Tommy LeeJones, Gary Oldman, Michael Rooker, Kevin Bacon, Joe Pesci, Jack Lemmon, Walther Matthau, Donald Sutherland, among others) put their best into the film, which ended up being nominated for several Academy Awards, winning the ones for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. JFK remains one of Stone's most controversial films yet today.
