Jan Halldoff is one of the most hard working Stockholm directors. I n the film
My ten , which he wrote together with Stig Claeson, he already showed that he had an eye for that which is typical Stockholm. He also possesses a dialect, comparable only to that of Elof Ahrle. The year after his debut in 1967, he portrayed the I ively teenage pop era. During his best moments, Halldoff shows a great sense of time and space. It's haphazard and messy, just like the teenagers in his films.
With the film Jackin 1977, Halldoff returned to his portrayal of young people desperately chasing after parties and fun before turning thirty. Ulf Lundell's debut novel Jack is of course a legendary success. The story of the young Jack who was surrounded by women, music and wine quickly became a cult book, with its joy for life and desperation. A lot of the people from the 1950's generation seemed to be able to relate to Jack's fate. Jack is about youngsters who didn't give a damn about politics, Vietnam and the rehab-center.
I nstead they concentrated on having a blast every night. Obviously a lot of people liked seeing this type of life style being portrayed on the white screen, because Jackwas a huge success.
Although Ulf Lundell proclaimed that he was happy with Halldoff's film, it was
criticised by many. They said is human portrayal was shallow and that he moralised over the people in the story. They could, however, not deny Halldoff's eye for surroundings. He received the harshest critics from Asa Moberg from the newspaper Aftonbladet who claimed that Jack was a pilsner movie and seemed upset about the fact that Jack neither masturbated nor got a blow job on screen. It's not easy to always try to please the critics.
