Based on a popular Dutch TV-series from the 60's, Pieter Kramer has created a musical pastiche in all the colours of the rainbow. He starts off with a title sequence of Busby Berkeley proportions, continuing with an intermixing of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Singin' in the Rain, before establishing a neat small town milieu. It's an obvious homage to not only the genre itself and the TV-series in particular, but also to the lavish choreography and explicit studio settings of the old Hollywood musicals.
The centre of town is a rest home run by nurse Klivia, lodging a disparate group of eccentrics. Next door, the morose Mr. Boordevol is frequently complaining about the
disturbance, but somehow they still manage to advert
any trouble from authorities. When young 'Gerrit and a hairdresser named Wouter appear, things will never be the same again.
Upon the foundation of the musical genre, Kramer manages to build a mix of cheerful gay camp and political allegory of the European society in its making. A Europe all singing and dancing.
