One morning Shing, a suspended cop and true casanova, finds an unknown girl in his livingroom. The girl, named Yan, claims to be his daughter and turns his comfortable bachelor life up side down. The two of them slowly get to know each other when hanging out on the beautiful streets of Macau looking for Yan’s missing dog. But Shing’s background as a corrupted cop hints of an uncertain future for the two of them. Is he ready to take responsibility for anyone but himself? Isabella is a charming movie with fantastic camera work, both skillfully and playfully cut. Through the intertitles we learn about how Macau was handed over from Portugal to China, and how the authorities fought smuggling and police corruption. Director Ho-Cheung Pang will easily deceive you if you don’t think twice. The film won the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Film Music in 2006.CAROLINE AFLALO
