Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

av Kazuhisa Takenouchi

An evil rock & roll manager from Earth kidnaps a pop band from another galaxy. In his advanced artist factory he deletes the memory of all four anesthetized band members and alters their looks to flawlessly suit the taste of the commercial music scene. With the manager ever present in the background, the zombie-like quartet that goes by the name of Crescendolls is an immediate success. They have the whole world at their feet. But a friend is hot on the trail.
A powerful combination is generated by Daft Punk’s music in sync with Leiji Matsumoto, who is a legend in manga circles and Kazuhi Takenouchi’s images. The lack of dialogue is compensated by blazing pictorial fireworks and the clever use of funkified house music. The collaboration between the French house duo and the Japanese filmmakers has earlier resulted in videos for the Daft Punk’s singles featured in the latest record Discovery, among others One More Time (the tune that becomes Crescendoll’s humongous hit). Thomas Banglater and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, the members of Daft Punk, have also produced in the film as well as taken part in the writing of the script. The critique of the commercial music industry is therefore obvious yet nonetheless entertaining. And there are worse ways to vent one’s frustrations over a branch dominated by greedy and megalomaniac slave drivers than to compete a visually extravagant and fantabulous together with one’s Manga heroes.
