Six-year-old Iris arrives at the boarding school inside of a coffin. She has no idea how or why she has ended up there and why the other girls tell her that she can never leave. As the girls study and practice ballet, they are immensely cruel to each other. All the while, the teachers tell them that happiness can only come out of obedience, But something puzzles Iris - where do the older girls go at night?
With Innocence, director Lucile Hadzihalilovic has created her own secluded world, with logic and mysteries of its own. Hadzihalilovic uses both visual and narra-
tive devices familiar from children's stories. Comparisons to films like Daria Argento's Suspiria and Agnieszka Holland's The Secret Garden come to mind. Innocence is a dark and threatening exploration of childhood and the creation of the feminine. Visually, the film shares a link with Hadzihalilovic's life partner and collaborator Gaspar Noe's Irreversible, refining many of that film's cinematic inventions.
