The Independent is a comedy about ridiculously inept director Morty Fineman, who takes himself and his role as independent artist very seriously. The film is a ''mocumentary'' about this fictitious director and contains lots of clips from his hundreds of turkeys. We follow his hopeless search for financial backers and his trying to escape from his debtors. The film features real-life independent directors like Nick Cassavetes and Peter Bogdanovich making solemn remarks about how important Morty Fineman's work is, how honest and real his films are. The Independent is a loving mocking of the American film industry, the independent scene and different genres. It is also rich in allusions to different film classics.
