In the world of men, there will always be a need for an opposition to rise in a variety of ways, and to expand. The addressed movie goers are, consciously or not, usually men, but there is a great demand for films that are not limited to a specific audience. With In the Company of Women, Lesli Klainberg and Gini Reticker capture women in the field of independent filmmaking. Well-known actors, directors, writers and critics such as Nancy Savoca, Patricia Clarkson, Susan Sarandon and Jodie Foster, speak about how they perceive their situation in the male dominated American film industry.
The film is a historical overview shown through selected film clips that discuss issues such as motherhood, sexuality and powerful female role models. Actress Tilda Swinton talks about Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan and Lili Taylor's portrayal of Valeri Solanas in I Shoot Andy Warhol and how liberating films like these are as they speak of the less than perfect woman.
In the Company of Women had its international premiere at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
