Jim Sheridan sure has a burning Irish heart, and now he continues his mission; this time by telling the personal story about an Irish family settling in New York, struggling to survive the everyday life, and also trying to cope with the pain after the loss of a son, Frankie. They move into a dilapidated apartment complex, living among other immigrants, junkies and dying artists, where they face a dizzying new future - but first they must face down a past that haunts every single one of them.
In America is all about what can keep you up, or bring you down, mostly seen from the daughters' perspective,
utterly well acted by sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger. Set in the early 80's, Sheridan evokes a collective New York City suffering from a spiritual crisis. He never comments upon the AIDS virus directly - at the time, there Was still no name
for this mystery disease. The film is outmost a painful rendez-vouz with death, life, magic and loss, and about having the courage to let go of your pain and mourning. Samantha Morton contributes, as always with a stunning performance, in the part of the mother.
