Scandals, deceits, religious conflicts– it is an Italian wedding. Film director Franco Elica is up to his neck with aggravations. His daughter is marrying a devoted catholic, he is asked to make another version of Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed and on top of it all, he is accused of sexual harassment. Upset, Franco flees to a Sicilian village. There he meets a man who makes his living shooting souvenir wedding films, a film director who is faking his own death and a penniless prince about to marry away his princess daughter to a rich lawyer. Franco, who falls in love with the princess, decides to sabotage the wedding. This could have been the plot for a nutty Italian Wedding Planner, if it wasn’t for old timer of Italian neorealism, Marco Bellocchio, who puts the holy matrimony in a full Kafkaesque experience. With The Wedding Director, Bellocchio is not only presenting a dark drama of deranged characters, he is also showing us his view on love, religion and modern Italian cinema. PONTUS MATHISSON
