Henry Adler is an ordinary bank clerk who wants to become an actor. He has developed a critical and moral view of the world based on his lonely, isolated existence in the increasingly violent big city. When Henry lands a minor part as a policeman in a TV-series called Crimewave, he becomes fascinated by the police's wielding of power to the extent that he starts to wear his uniform in private. As Henry becomes more and more infatuated with the independent actress Charlie Warner he starts to lose his grip on reality.
COMMENTARY
Take an ordinary man. Give him a uniform and see what happens. Still waters run deep - no good will come of playing games with authorities.
Henry Adler in I Love a Man in Uniform is a quiet and insecure bank clerk who nobody takes any notice of. He compensates his reserve by a fanatical law-abidingness. Henry dreams of a life dramatically different from his own, and when he lands the part of the policeman Flanagan in a TV-series, his dreams begin to seem real. Henry brings the police uniform with him back home to rehearse his lines in, and reality becomes increasingly difficult to separate from fiction.
The frustration of everyday life is slowly transferred to the role of the policeman and reveals itself through a wish to be treated with total obedience. The feeling of power and commanding respect becomes a drug that Henry cannot be without. The obsessiveness leads to a double life, where he gets an epinephrine kick out of patrolling the streets of the city dressed in uniform. The
dangerous game intensifies as Henry runs into Frank, a corrupt police officer.
Henry Adler is played by Tom McCamus.
Like a clever chameleon he accompanies the viewer through a lull of security into a fear of violence, and psychological undertones help to build up the high tension. The thrilling atmosphere of the movie gets under your skin after the tension has reached its climax. And you laugh with uncertainty. But the uncertain laughter comes to a halt, because when Henry has finished playing Flanagan in the TV-series, he can begin to play the role of his life. Henry starts to live the life of a fictitious policeman named Flanagan. And when he has gone over the edge nothing can stop him. ':'
