House of Usher was a milestone for both AIP and myself. For AIP, it began a sucessful Poe series that was destined to stretch, in one form or another, until decade's end. For myself, it gave me notoriety and critical acceptance in America. For movie audiences worldwide, it re-established a classic film genre: the gothic horror film.

Comment:
Usher was a project of Roderick Usher's fevered and deranged mind, or more precisely, it was an emanation of the unconscious mind of Poe himself.
Put together correctly, the classic horror sequence is the equivalent of the sexual act. The sharp, shocking event at the end that releases the tension is the equivalent of the orgasmic climax. A comedian building tension sucessfully to a punch line gets a laugh at the climax. A director in a horror genre does the same but gets a scream. Either way, there is a growing tension and release - all analogous to the rythms of a sexual act.
