This is a black comedy. The absurdities begin when a very pregnant and hysterically jealous girlfriend chops off the finger of her significant other when he makes sexual overtures towards her. This is followed by a roller-coaster hunt for the missing digit in this dark screwball comedy, effectively destroying the stereotyped picture of the happy suburban couple.
Is the mere thought of being unfaithful in itself a crime? This is the question that Salwen asks in his new film. As in Salwen's debut film, ”Denise Calls Up, His and Hers ”is a fast paced comedy about a few young people who don't have time for anything except themselves. They are far too involved in their own thoughts and feelings to be able to see where the problem actually lies.
In making this film, Salwen was inspired by slapstick as well as by the classic screwball comedy, a genre that often questions matrimony and the prevailing social conditions. The hunt for the finger can be compared with the search for the leg in Hawks' ”Bringing Up Baby”, and the motif of a couple lying in separate rooms fantasising about sex was common in 30's comedies.
