Centred around two female teenagers working as prostitutes on a brothel, Hardcore can be described as a modern fairytale – however filled with sex, drugs and violence but also love and tenderness.Marked by sexual abuse as a child, Martha is careful and pending. Nadia, on the other hand, is more rebellious; she questions the employer and she only sleeps with rough men - since “softies” get to obsessed. Nevertheless the two girls soon form a caring couple. But while Nadia strives for fame and glory and knows how to reach her goals, Martha cannot cope with the neglect Nadia’s changing personality renders.Hardcore is not only a product of the New Greek Cinema, but also of the classical Greek tragedy. In a harsh world where the most common elements might be a Saab automobile or a Dancing Queen-cover, you ought to trust no one. Almost exclusively shot in interiors Hardcore gives a truly dark impression. With a contemplating photo and an extraordinary silent soundtrack, first time director Iliadis focuses on the characters’ inner conditions, where jealousy, self-assertion and the search for happiness are driving forces.JON ASP
