Four men in a car stop outside a door on an empty back street. Two of them load their guns and sneak in through the door. The other two are waiting, but nothing happens. Suddenly their companions appear in the doorway. Shooting follows. Everybody dies except Jack, who takes the money and runs.
The small-time hoods of the town soon get the scent of the stolen money. Their leaders are Jack's sons, Michael who is a snob and a small-time wangler, and George who has a deadly fast hand. George and Michael have not seen each other in years, but the reunion is not an entirely happy one. But with two dense cops and Earl, a brutal gangster in tow, they agree on a temporary reconciliation.
The plot is further complicated by Jack being shot, after which he drags himself to Michael's flat where he divulges a clue to each of the sons before he breathes his last sigh. In order to find the money, the two brothers are forced to follow a road lined with violence, lies and black humour.
Handgun was shot on Long Island where you could find the right atmosphere for a parody of 70's macho action. Handgun is a fresh take on a genre some people might have thought dead as a dodo, and at the same time it takes a sly dig at filmmakers such as Hal Hartley and Quentin Tarantino.
