Hamilton

av Matthew Porterfield

In his feature debut Porterfield portrays the everyday reality of two teenage parents. Over the course of two hot summerdays in a suburb of Baltimore, we follow Lena and Joe, that have just become parents by accident. Lena is staying with Joe’s parents even though he has moved to a place of his own. They don’t see much of each other since he is balancing two jobs and she is staying at home with the baby. The film focuses on Lena, as she is trying her best to connect with the angry, unapproachable Joe. Porterfield tells us the young couple’s story through minimal dialogue and fragments of an entire picture. The film is conveyed in carefully crafted images, showing Maryland with its lush woods and steamy roads. The amateur actors are as natural and real as the scenes, and the director displays an exploring eye, using artful imagery instead of narrative. NATALIE MAJERSKI
