In this second part of Johnny To’s ode to the triads, current leader Lok has ruled his Wo Shing Sing Society in a two year long Pax Triadica, allowing his soldiers to bathe in wealth. But as the tradition is established, it is time again for a new election. In Election 2 we examine the unbound hunger for power in a man who does not want to be replaced. To continues to adapt the original’s philosophy that the most brutal acts are not committed with a sledgehammer, but carried out sinisterly behind the scenes. He sets the camera in the eyes of a prowling animal and leads us forward on a decidedly darker path than the first film. Election 2 is distinguished by intelligence, wit and violence with excellent performances throughout the cast. The film’s finale is what really sets it apart amongst others in the genre, and also leaves us with one question: Is To one film away from closing his Hong Kong God Father-trilogy?PONTUS MATHISSON
