The election for Hong Kong’s oldest triad society is, according to Johnny To, not so different from any other democratic election – only twice as greedy and ten times as deceitful. With Election, he leaves his earlier over-the-top action voyages for a mythological story about the power structures within the mafia and the dark desires of human nature. In Election, the vote for The Wo Shing Shing Society’s new chairman stands between the patient, intelligent gangster Lok and his brutal antithesis Big D. Determined to win, Big D goes against hundreds of years of tradition, and in doing so, threatens to tear the triad apart. It might be hard to imagine a new take on the triad genre, but innovative crime veteran To, has set himself a bigger task than a minute study of the violent lifestyle lived by triad members. He is flipping good and evil upside down, showing us cowards rather than cold-blooded murderers and telling the story of simple people using their instincts to survive. PONTUS MATHISSON
