Love is not what it used to be. Take, for instance, the young couple at this restaurant, they are not in love! At least not as in love as Spud and Cherri. Who? Spud and Cherri, the King and Queen of Romance.
Initially, Bill Plympton takes us to a contemporary world, permeated by coldness and hatred, then he moves on to telling the urban legend of the geek Spud and the rockabilly babe Cherri. Like in all films about true love, the couple begins by hating each other. When accidentally insulting Cherri's brains, Spud ends up as her slave. Now this is a film by Bill
Plympton, the master of the grotesque, hence it doesn't take long for the ever so innocent Grease-like love story to turn into a zombie flick with a Carrie-like feel- it's the night of the living dead. As in previous work by the director, people throw up their intestines, poke their eyes out and inflict serious pain on themselves and others. Similar to the Plympton excerpts on MTV, Hair High is all about the repulsive. Although the film jumps between genres, this is Plympton's most cohesive story to date. It actually makes sense; and what a creepy and humorous sense that is.
