Gypsy Magic

After several years of hardship the gypsy Taip finds a profitable way to support his large and noisy family. One by one he persuades his mother in law, his wife and a few of the kids to pretend to die. This gives him generous contributions from the municipality for the funerals. He spends the money to move to a better part of the slum, he buys a racing horse and dreams of leaving Macedonia for India.
Everyone who liked ”Time of the Gypsies” by Emir Kusturica, and Ettore Scola's ”Ugly, Dirty and Bad” will appreciate Stole Popov's ”Gypsy Magic.” This is another extremely entertaining and touching story about some people living in the slum. This could have been a story about whatever ethnic group as well as gypsies, because it's a universal story that take place before our eyes - it's about being poor and despised and forced to live like outcasts.
This is a world that we never meet in the dailies and that fascinates and repells at the same time. As a great story-teller, Popov leads us through the overcrowded sheds and invites us to take part in the daily life among the gypsies for better and for worse. The most important things in this harsh environment are the family and friends, the songs and the music - and the joy to find some lucrative way of getting a little bit of extra money. The audience finds great pleasure in the happiness and crazy humour among these people.
Keep your eyes open for the main actor Miki Manojlovic, who's about to become a big name in European cinema. He appeared in two of Kusturica's films, ”When Father Was Away on Business” and ”Underground”, in Goran Paskaljevics ”Someone Else's America” and in Martine Dugowsons ”Shadow Play.”
