THE PRIZE HUNTER MORRISON RIDES through the desert with a dead man thrown across his horse's back. He runs into Farley, They settle at a camp fire and in order to pass the time they compete with one another by telling gruesome stories. The topics are lust, revenge and death and appeal to the audience's interest in the bizarre. The film has been described as a meeting between Sam Shepard and Edgar Allan Poe.

GRIM PRAIRIE TALES IS A HANDSOME and lyrical, episodic film by the young director Wayne Coe. As the name suggests, it takes place during the time of the Wild West but contrary to the myth, the main he-man challenges don't consist of violent gun-duels, even if those also are present, but of the ability to tell a good story.
The young White, married, yet quite innocent Farley (Brad Dourif) meets the urbane, dark, shabby and cynical Morrison (James Earl Jones) at a spooky night camp in the middle of the prairie,
At first the meeting is highly charged, but while measuring their abilities of telling stories the atmosphere gradually becomes lighter.
We're presented with the anecdotes' slightly bizarre moral undertones and somewhat brutal denouements, showing an ironic attitude to the darker sides of existence.
Grim Prairie Tales fries the imagination both with its beauty and mildness, while at the same moment it rigorously lectures us. GÖRAN LINDEROTH
