Gozu

Gozu

av Miike Takashi

The opening scene of Gozu, in which the Yakuza member,
Ozaki, beats up a chihuahua which has been staring at him
for too long, hence branded a Yakuza attack dog, is already a
classic. But Ozaki’s paranoia does not stop there, for it gains
in intensity. Considering each living being a potential enemy
has its merits, but there are limits, even when you are a mem-
ber of the Japanese mafi a. A couple of incidents later and
the Azamawari clan asks Minami, Ozaki’s best friend, to take
out the unstable colleague. Both journey to the countryside,
to the peculiar town of Nagoya. Ozaki suddenly vanishes and
Minami falls into some sort of nightmarish state. While the
proprietor of Minami’s hotel is rather cautious, the inhabit-
ants of Nagoya behave more and more eccentrically. And in
an unexpected place, Ozaki’s body is found.
In the fi lming of Gozu, Takashi Miike has been helped by
Sakichi Sato, the person behind the manuscript to Ichi – the
Killer, and his constant supporter Koji Endo, who wrote the
score. This collaboration is in itself enough for capturing the
humoristic essence of Takashi Miike. All themes and small
details found in previous fi lms – from the weakness for breast
milk to spectacular deliveries – are brought to their logical
conclusion in this fi lm. Which naturally makes this Miike’s
best fi lm ever.
