The Year of the Dog

Sergej is a resentful violent criminal who has recently served one of his numerous prison sentences. With his impressive criminal record he feels both without roots and excluded. He meets Vera by chance, a shy and lonely middle-aged woman. They both long for human intimacy and tenderness, and this brings them together.

Sergej tries to save Vera's honour but is caught up in an argument, and the confrontation leads to him brutally killing a man. He runs away with Vera to escape further punishment. Eventually they reach a beautiful and tranquil village but it soon turns out that the village has been evacuated due to radiation. Still they decide to remain.

However the idyll is disturbed when a couple of plastic-clad strangers arrive to loot the deserted shops. Sergej takes the intruders hostage, but Vera convinces him to let them go. Despite the fact that the robbers left, Sergej smells a rat and wants Vera to get away from the village.
