Girlfight

Diana Guzman, a young Puerto Rican in one of the roughest neighbourhoods of Brooklyn, has to fight for respect every day. She is misunderstood at school, has few friends and a father who doesn't see her for what she is. The road to self-realisation is found in an unexpected place; the local boxing gym where Diana starts training. Her new career is at first viewed with suspicion by a society stuck in conventional roles and when Diana's friendship with boxer Adrian turns romantic, the situation becomes increasingly complicated. Girlfight is a film about boxing with choreographed sparring scenes, but also an urban feminist drama that turns male-female conventions on their heads. Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Diana, is very convincing in her first feature film role.
