Two years ago 23 illegal Chinese immigrants drowned while picking cockles on a shore in the north of England. Now the British director Nick Broomfield, known for controversial documentaries such as Kurt and Courtney, has made a fiction feature film based on the tragedy. Ghosts tells the story of the young mother Ai Qin who travels illegally to England to secure a better life for her son. Throughout Qin’s journey her dreams of finding a way to a decent living are slowly being crushed. Instead she finds herself in a country rife with racism, corruption and lousy work conditions.Broomfield investigates the circumstances that put Great Britain’s illegal immigrants in a position where they risk their lives for pennies. The use of non-actors, many with experience of the migrant lifestyle they have been asked to portray, blurs the borders between fiction and reality. Ai Qin, one of the few survivors of the tragedy, gives an extraordinary performance as herself.PER NYSTRÖM
