And the earth was without form, and void, and the darkness was over the abyss, and the spirit of God hovered over the water. And there was an island where there lived people. And there was to be boats along the shores of the island, and there was to be a church where ceremonies were held on Sundays. And there was cattle and people, and there was a home for them; they all lived a rich life and had a home
to come to in the evenings. One could hear the voices of people and the voices of animals. But it was to be empty. It was to be without form, and void, and ... Amen. A boy would be sent to this island to regain his strength, and the boy would
be taken care of by Jakub; a weird being, who lives alone on the island with his horse ''Missionary''. And Jakub was to translate Vergilius' Georgica into Swahili.
Keedus lets us meet a boy, who does not know what love is, since nobody has ever told him, and a man, who must be considered as the opposite of disillusioned, shall help the boy regain his joi de vivre. Two odd creatures, both sick in their own way, help the other. One exists spiritually, the other physically. Georgica is a film where philosophy and the eternal questions are put front and center.
For it is hardly a coincidence that Jakub is translating Vergilius. This roman poet, contemporary to Emperor Augustus,
who among other th i ngs wrote Georgicaan instructional poem about agriculture. Vergilius becomes the master and the prophet. And Jakub becomes Vergilius. He has beeh ives, grows wheat, uses the sea weed etc. Jakub is given the role of the boy's mentor - someone has to carry the knowledge onward.
Someone has to continue spreading the knowledge of what the essence of life is. But the question is if it is not too late? And the earth was without form, and void, and the darkness was over the abyss, and the spirit of God hovered over the water.
