One morning two teenage girls, Hillary and Bonnie, meet in a desolate suburbian landscape consisting of motorways, fast food joints and dull housing estates. They soon become friends and share experiences, sorrows and secrets in a way that most teenage girls do.
But something goes wrong. Gradually the mode of expression is escalating and the practical jokes become increasingly wild. Eventually they kill an old woman. They did it, as they will claim later, ''for fun''.
John is a journalist who receives the challenging assignment of trying to make sense of this inconceivable act. Jane is a lawyer determined to break down the barriers which stop the girls from feeling any regret over what they have done. The girls, fourteen and fifteen years old, stubbornly refuse to soften their statement that their killing was just ''fun''. In doing this they challenge the adults to defend the society that has refused them the right to love.
