From the Edge of the City shows a dark picture of an obscure Athens- Europe's south-eastern melting pot. Not only in the shape of dust, garbage and pollution but mainly with illegal trafficking of drugs and people. Sasha is a 17-year-old pontioi- a Greek-Russian that originates from the Black Sea coast. He was born in Kazakstan but lives from the age of ten in a poor suburb in the outskirts of Athens. He and his friends, stricken with apathy and restlessness, are trying to get along in a world where they neither feel welcomed nor at home. He began to smoke marijuana, commit burglary and walk the streets as a prostitute at any early age. To preserve his manhood he also goes to prostitutes. The plot moves quickly between drugs, fights, parties and prostitution. The philosophy they go by is that a woman you no longer love serves as a prostitute. But in the middle of all this there is a search for righteousness. Between two cultures, sensing that they don't belong to either of them, they escape society's rules in search of their own identities and dreams. Just as the horizon once was considered to be the end of the world, Athens' suburb becomes their own wall. The memories of Kazakstan, of childhood, are more a fantasy than reality. Constantinos Giannaris cast most of the characters using real street kids instead of actors. He wants to show the brutality and vital force that comes from the self-experienced. This gives this movie a depth and credibility that makes it come nearer the unpainted and naked truth. The movie clearly condemns the Greek establishment, with its stereotyped materialistic thinking.
