Fresh is a rare phenomenon: an American film financed by Europeans and with a black cast.
Fresh is a twelve-year old boy who lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his aunt and several cousins. He earns money on the side as a drug courier and is often late for school. He dreams of a better life for himself and his sister Nicole, who is a drug addict.
After school he sneaks off to see his alcoholic, although intelligent, father for a game of chess. He is taught that you have to sacrifice your favourite pieces in order to overpower the king and win the game. This piece of advice is also going to influence Fresh's life after he has witnessed the brutal murder of his two best friends.
The strategic and carefully thought out chess movements becomes a metaphor for Fresh's continued existence. How many of your favourite pieces is it worth sacrificing to win the game? And what is the price of winning?
