An Enemy of the People

An Enemy of the People

av Erik Skjoldberg

The world famous Norwegian play writer Henrik Ibsen wrote En folkefiende in 1882, at a time when democracy was breaking through all over Europe. Ibsen, having studied Nietzsche, was quite pessimistic about the development and in his play he tried to show that the will of the masses not necessarily has to be a good thing. Now the Norwegian director Erik Skjoldbjaerg has transformed Ibsens play into a modern drama made for the white screen. In the film we meet Tomas Stockman, a critical journalist, who always tries to stand up for what he believe is right. When the TV channel he works for wants to restrict his freedom as a journalist, Tomas chooses to leave his job and move out on the countryside. He gets involved with his brothers company and starts to work in the water business. His ambition is to give the Norwegians the purest drinking water possible. However, when some lab results show that the water is toxic, Tomas is confronted with a moral dilemma. His righteousness tells him to inform everybody about the scandal. On the other hand, leaking out such information would imply disastrous consequences for his family. An enemy of the people is a film about the difficulties in standing up for your ideals.
