Van once lived the perfect life. ''The white picket fence I ife, good friends, good family'', and living by a picturesque little lake. But when his dad lost both legs in a car accident, his mother could not handle the pressure and disappeared with all of the fam i Iy's money. Van and h is dad now live in a smaller house, and family happiness is a faint memory, trapped in old holiday films. Finances stop him from resuming his college studies, and thereby keeping his girlfriend. His two best friends are burglars and he himself becomes more and more indifferent and destructive.
A new family moves into Van's old house and Van develops a peculiar friendship with their son Doug. Van and Doug are each other's complete opposites. Doug has the perfect family, is successful in the university swim team, and got a sports car as a graduation present. He lives the life that Van could have lived. Van on the other hand has to take care of his dad around the clock, they have financial problems, social problems, and problems
just living together. Despite differences and jealousy, Van and Doug has one thing in common: their passion for swimming. As it turns out, Doug does not have the perfect I ife either.
The film is characterized by contrasts, for instance is Van's tragic life cleverly contrasted againstthe beautiful environment at the lake, and Van's father in his wheel chair in contrast to Doug's super athletic dad. A central topic is also the different opportunities and choices a youth has to face, and their consequences.
