Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

The much awaited film version of Hunter S. Thompson's cult book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Journalist Raol Duke has, together with his lawyer Dr. Gonzo, gone
to Las Vegas to cover the motorcycle race Mint 400. That much writing doesn't get produced since the back of the red convertible is filled with various sense enhancing chemicals. The whole thing could be described as a drug odysse.
It has taken 27 years to get the book to the movie theaters, which could be seen as surprising considering its popularity and the attention it has gotten. Worse literature has gotten producers to jump ecstatically with excitement in Hollywood. But it is not an easy task to shoot a book so full of inner experiences and heavy drug hallucinations. It is hard to imagine a director better suited to direct this mayhem than Terry Gilliam. His fans will appreciate the scene where Raol Duke under the influence of drugs starts thinking the whole hotel lobby is filled with giant lizards.
The two main characters who go out to find the true American dream are played by Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood etc.) and Benicio del Toro (The Usual Suspects, Basquiat).
They have put a lot of effort into getting the right tone for their characters. Del Toro gained 20 kilos to play the unstable Dr. Gonzo from Samoa. Depp spent months at the home of Thompson on The Owl Farm in Woody Creek, Colorado, to study the writer.
Thompson is famous for being as twisted as his alter ego Raol Duke. There are countless stories of
accidental shootings, fights and car chases in the footsteps of Thompson.
The first night Depp and Thompson met, they constructed a small bomb that they detonated in the backyard.
