A serial killer is spreading horror in the holy Iranian city of Mashad. In a poor neighbourhood several prostitutes are found brutally murdered. A retiring police officer is put in charge of the investigation and when he coincidently finds a puppet at one of the crime scenes, he becomes aware of a possible connection between the victims and his own past. This is the beginning of an intense chase to find the perpetrator where nobody can be sure of keeping their heads. Meanwhile, a young man is being educated in a literalistic Koran school with cruel rituals and strict hierarchic structures. His deep religious conviction and the continuous discussions with the “master” of the school encourage him to act against sinners around him. This bloody Iranian equivalence to Seven (not only because it’s raining all the time) is both a look into the violent world of Muslim fundamentalism and the contemporary political situation in Iran. The Forbidden Chapter is the second feature movie of Fariborz Kamkari, whose controversial relation-drama “Black Tape” was banned in his native country. DANIEL STRAND
