Everynight...Everynight

Australia in 1972. Christopher Dale is taken to the H Division, the toughest division within the Australian prison system. He is humiliated and assaulted before he is finally locked up in his cell. Dale asserts his right to be treated with respect. But inside the walls of H Division there is neither justice nor mercy. You become one of society's ''unwanted pieces of furniture'' and are treated accordingly.

Day follows day in a constant stream of threats, abuse and cruel games instigated by merciless guards. The goal is to break down the inmates so they no longer look upon themselves as human. When Dale finally gives in, he tries to make the others do the same in one last attempt to protest against an inhuman prison system.

The film is based on a true story which took place in one of Australia's most notorious prisons during the 1970's. H Division in the Pentridge prison opened in 1958 in a vain attempt from the authorities to meet violence with violence.

Dale's infernal struggle to defend the right to keep your human dignity, is depicted in black and white images and with a deliberately intrusive cinematic language which occasionally sparkles with sublime beauty.

The director himself says: ''Australia has traditionally dodged films that make a statement about contemporary society. The few local films which have touched a nerve, have for the most part, been disregarded by a public which refuses to accept some of the uglier aspects of Australia. I made Everynight… Everynight to inform the public about the premeditated brutalisation of prisoners inside H Division and how this is contributing to the ever increasing number of violent crimes. I have used traditional story telling methods to illustrate an unconvetional depiction of criminals, who since the beginning of colonisation have been disregarded as either worthless or lacking intelligence ''
