”Eva Perón - The True Story” is about Eva Perón, wife of Juan Perón the former president of Argentina. During the the fifties Eva Perón was fighting for the poor in Argentina, something that was seen a threat by the people of power and by the aristochracy. The film takes place during the last two years of her life.
Eva Perón died only 33 years old but her destiny is very pecuiar and interesting, wich might explain that there are two films made about her, close in time, Alan Parker's ”Evita” and Desanozos ”Eva Perón - The True Story”.
In ”Eva Perón - The True Story” the main character is initially portraited as a demanding and manipulative woman who bosses with her subjects. As the film goes on however, her character is given more dimensions by Desanzo's use of flashbacks and his intimate way of telling the story. She gets to be emotional and show genuine compassion with those in hardship. When it comes to politics her relationship with her husband is not without conflicts. Eva Perón and the military collide on how to run the country, Juan Perón have to go between and this creates tension between him and his wife.
Desanzo's film was made in seven weeks in Buenos Aires and is not of the same kind of poduction as Evita. The acress Esther Goris (Eva) has made a statement about Alan Parker's Evita, and means that it has helped the Argentine film. Partially because ”Evita” created an international interest, and partially because Parker's filming in Buenos Aires also helped financing ”Eva Perón - The True Story”. However, Goris means that Parker's film does not show the true picture of Eva Perón.
Desanoz film is not a political pamphlet, it tries to create a nuanced portrait of the last two years if Eva Perón's life. The film shows how power corrupts people and how it can be misused.
