Eraserhead

Eraserhead

av David Lynch

Henry Spencer is a man suffering from his own inner hell, whilst living in a post-apocalyptic futuristic purgatory. His insane girlfriend Mary gives premature birth to a grotesque creature-like child, and Henry drifts further into a state where the border between nightmare and reality is completely erased. The deadpan dialogue works on a constant layer of noise, whether it is the sounds of constantly working factories, rat-like puppies breastfeeding, broken radiators or defect electric writing. Combined with the slow, fixed shots and the sparse yet extremely powerful lightning, this is a hallucinatory and twisted story that is told in images and sound rather than in dialogue and plot. Despite the similarities, Eraserhead is not set in Metropolis, but rather in the shantytown of Fritz Lang’s vision of the future. And although haunting and claustrophobic, omnipresent is the absurd pitch-black sense of humor which still works as one of Lynch’s most precious trademarks. Eraserhead is more than an experiment in form, based on classic film noir aesthetics – it is a completely refreshing take on cinema that still lacks comparison.
