When did you last see a sad film that made you happy? In the City is about a group of good friends in Barcelona, though it could have been anywhere. Sara, Sofia, Mario, Manu and their friends are in their mid-thirties and lead good, normal lives. Most of them have beautiful relationships - in the eyes of everyone else. However, behind the facade, they all have their problems. Where one is being cheated on, another is trying to hide the fact that he is dating his 16-year-old student. Maybe these seemingly good friends don't know each other that well after all? Like most people they make unwise decisions and end up in both sad, funny and embarrassing situtations. Their lives may not be what they dreamed of, but
there is something charming and very human about these people and their flaws. And in the end, perhaps their friends will be there for them when they most need it.
Cesc Gay's In the City is almost hard to watch, as the scenarios are so familiar to your own life, relationships and embarrassements. You've been there as well, and you feel with the characters in all situations. In the end, you realize that even though you've taken part of some strangers unhappy life situations, it all served to make your own a little better.
