On the one hand a story about four phases of a relationship told through three couples, and on the other a meditation on memory and history, Éloge de l'Amour proves to be master director Godard's most accessible film in decades. Shot on black and white film and video with bleeding colours, focusing on ''the meeting, the passion, the breakup and the reconciliation'' as well as questions on who controls history, it is reminiscent of both 60's classics like Vivre sa vie and more complicated and fragmented 80's films like Detective. In true Godard manners, it is also filled with quotes, references and slogans, like ''cinema is the spearhead of commerce'', but especially gratifying is the feeling that Godard just might have been enjoying himself making this film, maybe more than in a long time.
