Elling and Kjell Bjarne are roommates at an institution but have now been offered an apartment. There is only one catch: they have to prove that they can live as independent, mature individuals. A reasonable demand perhaps, but difficult to live up to when you can't even answer the phone or buy food on your own. Gradually though, they learn how to deal with these obstacles, and start to enjoy their independence.
Elling features excellent performances by the two leads as they characterise two socially unstable persons trying to live a normal life. And in the end, aren't we all trying to fit in?
Elling is a great success in Norway and will compete for best film at this year's European Film Awards.
