Daft Punk’s Electroma

Daft Punk’s Electroma

av Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Thomas Bangalter

Electronic pioneers Daft Punk continue their filmmaking ambitions with a follow-up to their sci-fi extravaganza Interstella 5555, which was screened at Stockholm International Film Festival in 2003. In Electroma the world is devoid of man and populated solely by robots. They all wear shiny motorcycle helmets and tight leather suits, even the baby robots. When our two lead characters realize they want to be human, a road movie-like adventure begins. The pair travel trough stark American landscapes and deserts until reaching a town in Inyo County, California. Here they are covered in liquid latex by a local scientist team, who aims to make grotesque flesh-colored masks of their helmets. This leads to much anger amongst the local robot population and the two robots-aspiring-to-be-humans flee over salt flats. As there is no dialogue, it is the music that carries the story onwards, together with the photography that speaks of loneliness and beauty. DOROTEA ÖSTER
