Zapa, a young locksmith, is forced to leave his hometown and ends up an unpaid recruit in the Buenos Aires police force. Ruled by personal favours and debts, the world of the police is both corrupt and dangerous. Zapa, however finds his way and slowly learns the rules. He also engages in an affair with one of the teachers at the police academy. Soon, he is chosen by his superior for a supposedly important assignment, drawing him even deeper into the dark world of law enforcement. EI Bonaerense gives a very sombre portrait of today's Argentina as being a world where you can trust no one except perhaps your closest family, and where you always need to watch your back. It also confirms director Pablo Trapero's talent for telling a personal story whilst at the same time commenting on society at large. JAKOB ABRAHAMSSON
