In Singapore's suburbs four young men spend their time driving motorcycles, fighting rival gangs and increasing their funds by petty crime. With references to both classic ''juvenile delinquency'' films and more light-hearted coming of age-films, Eating Air creates its own niche in its depiction of the boys slacker life and their dream of easy money. Adding to this is the innovative imagery; intermixed daydreams shaped as samurai or kung fu fantasies that interrupt grey everyday life and inserted comic strips that are used to take the action forward, stands out. The sensitive depiction of a fumbling love story between a hard-working girl and one of the lads contributes to Eating Air's peculiar nature.
