DUST GAMES

DUST GAMES

av Martin Marecek

International Monetary Fund and World Bank conferences, held in cities around the world, often (more than the message expressed by the events themselves) evoke pictures of demonstrations and street vandalism. The media certainly plays its part in this and so Martin Marecek and his film crew decided to cover the meeting in Prague in 2000. The documentary objectively shows the preparations of the police as well as the those of the activists, interviews with people on different political margins, lectures with school classes informing the students about the IMF and the expected clashes in the streets. Marecek films a wide spectrum of events and pointedly uncovers the lack of communication between the conference officials and demonstrating activists. As one girl breaks through the barricade and questions the officials, they chuckle at her costume instead of taking her seriously. This lack of dialogue is also illustrated in the street scenes where rocks and water cannon are stronger than words. Two weeks of filmed events manage to shed new light on a complex debate whose problems are far from solved. JOHAN LINDQVIST
